New Product - Trango Cinch

Cinch™

The Cinch offers up a lightning-fast rope feed, with bomber locking-assist stop and a smooth lower, all while controlling the brake strand.

The Cinch™ is the latest in a long line of innovative belay devices introduced by Trango. We designed it with an eye for function, aesthetics, and simplicity so it offers up a secure belay and lower on a wide range of single ropes.
On smaller diameter ropes, or when holding falls that generate extremely high loads (in excess of factor 1) the Cinch acts dynamically, reducing shock loads to the belay system. In addition, it will release easily and modulate fluidly while you’re rappelling or lowering off. The Cinch feeds rope easier than any other device, fits nicely in your hand, and weighs 182gm. For use on CE/UIAA dynamic climbing ropes only.
Optimum rope size is 9.4 - 11mm.

Exciting New Brand - Endura Cycle Clothing

We are very excited to have recieved our first delivery of Endura Cycle Clothing. Its already in some stores and the response in the first few days has been VERY positive.

The ethos at Endura matches with ours here at Global Climbing. Our involvement with the outdoor industry is born of the passion for adventure. This excert from the Endura website "about us" page shows its the same for them:

"The company’s philosophy remains true to its original concept of high performance, long lasting cycle clothing using the best available materials and design and by investing heavily in development and innovation (the company now has multiple patents granted and pending).

We are moving

Global Climbing is currently in transition from being a RAK Free Trade Zone company to being a Dubai registered LLC general trading company. We are currently finalising warehouse/office space in Dubai Investment Park (DIP) and as soon as we have the new address details we will distribute them.

Our email addresses and mobile phone numbers will all remain the same but our landline and fax numbers along with PO Box will change as we make the move.

In the meantime there is no change in any of our contact details. We expect the actual move to happen during April.

These are exciting times for Global Climbing. RAK has been a great place to be based as its where the mountains meet the sea. The time has come though to move to the bright lights and as a result we will be able to provide a much closer level of service to our retail and business partners along with much better logistical support via proper warehousing.

As with any business move during the actual physical process a lot of time will be used up and, being realistic, this will impact on some deliveries. We'd ask you to be patient and bear with us as this will only be very temporary and everyone should see a significant improvement with the all NEW Global Climbing LLC.

Ian’s opinion – This is looking like a great headtorch and mine is bagsied. Yes its a top spec headtorch with a high powered (100 lumen) focused LED for peering deep into the gloom and 2 small wide beemed LED’s for close up faffing and reading at night and yes its got an extra battery compared to most and therefore has loads of battery life (up to 200hrs!!!). Key for me though is its got all this and its waterproof (Rated IPX7 which translates to 30minutes 1 meter underwater) which = fine for sea kayaking at night in the worst conditions. This is the right headtorch for any serious outdoors person.

Second new bit of kit in is the Black Diamond Outdoor Lantern

The Blurb "Designed for ounce-conscious backpackers, climbers and travelers, the Black Diamond Orbit lantern packs 45 lumens of bright, non-glaring light in an ultra-portable package. A DoublePower LED works with our dual reflector system and frosted globe to illuminate everything from tent-bound reading to pre-dawn racking. The unique dimming switch provides the optimal amount of light and helps conserve batteries, while the collapsible, double-hook hang loop attaches to tent ceilings and tree branches alike."

Ian's Opinion- This looks like a neat little lantern. The housing feels robust enough to cope with the rigours of a backpack and it would be super handy in any camp when folks are faffing around cooking etc. Head torches are too individualistic, this is a light for sharing. 10 or 45 lumens for 24 or 15 hrs are good options for an ambient light to faff by.

These 2 products are available to all good outdoor retailers in the region. If you cant find them in stock ask and they'll be able to get them.

Petzl has discovered that exerting excessive force on the fully extended handle of the GRIGRI 2 can cause internal damage, such that the GRIGRI 2 handle may become stuck in the open position.

When the handle is stuck in this position the assisted braking function is disabled. A damaged GRIGRI 2 in this configuration will function similarly to a manual belay device (e.g. tube style device).

When using a damaged GRIGRI 2 with the handle stuck in the position as shown in Figure 1, failure to control the braking side of the rope will increase the risk of an uncontrolled descent. A GRIGRI 2 with a damaged handle must be immediately retired from service.

It is important to note that failure to control the braking side of the rope is a misuse of the GRIGRI 2 under any circumstance (See GRIGRI 2 Technical Notice - pdf file, 2,5Mo).

As of June 20, 2011, seven damaged products have been returned to Petzl through our worldwide distribution network. Petzl has no knowledge of any accidents resulting from a damaged GRIGRI 2 handle.

 Petzl Response

Because the safety of our users is our primary concern, as a measure of precaution Petzl has decided to take the following actions:

• increase the mechanical strength of the handle on all GRIGRI 2’s since serial number 11137.
• recall all GRIGRI 2’s with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136, and replace with a new revised GRIGRI 2.

Petzl will pay for all shipping costs to complete this replacement.

If you have a GRIGRI 2 (D14 2O, D14 2G, D14 2B) with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136, stop use immediately and contact Petzl America to initiate an exchange.
